Mental Health and Wellbeing Inpatient Services

Mental Health and Wellbeing Services support people in our community by providing care and support in the least restrictive way possible.

At times, a person may need additional or more intensive support, treatment and care. When this level of care cannot be safely or effectively provided at home or in the community, a short stay in an inpatient setting may be recommended.

Inpatient care is one of several supports available and is focused on providing safety, stabilisation and support during times when extra care is needed.

Admission to an inpatient unit may be considered when someone needs extra support, for example if:

a change in medication is needed and closer monitoring would be helpful
their mental health challenges are particularly intense and they are finding it hard to cope in their usual environment
there are concerns about their safety or overall wellbeing.

During an inpatient admission, the treating team will work alongside the person, and where appropriate their family and carers, to provide high-quality care. This care is guided by recovery-oriented practice, focusing on safety, dignity, choice and supporting what matters most to the person.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Services has four inpatient facilities:

Adult Acute Unit
A 35 bed short-term acute inpatient unit that provides intensive therapeutic treatment for people living in the Loddon Campaspe Southern Mallee region aged 16 to 65 years. For more information click here.

Extended Care Unit
A 20 bed secure inpatient unit providing medium to long term inpatient treatment and rehabilitation for patients who experience unremitting and severe symptoms of a mental illness for persons aged 18 to 65 years. For more information click here.

Older Person's Unit
A 20 bed unit which provides a mental health inpatient service to those over the age of 65 (but not exclusively) across the Loddon Campaspe Southern Mallee region. For more information click here.

Parent Infant Unit
A 5 bed mental health inpatient unit for parents and infants. We assess and treat the mental health of the primary caregiver and support/strengthen the attachment relationship between parent and infant. For more information click here.
