Special Care Nursery staff care for premature, small and unwell babies. This includes babies born at Bendigo Health, those who have been transferred in from smaller regional hospitals, and babies who have been transferred back from tertiary centres once they are stable, ensuring they can be closer to home.
If babies are outside of Bendigo Health SCN's scope of practice they will be stabilised and transferred to a tertiary centre (NICU) for further investigation and treatment.
We have a multidisciplinary team which is comprised of nurses (including nurses with neonatal qualifications and NICU experience), HMOs, paediatric registrars, paediatric consultants, maternity support workers, lactation consultants and allied health professionals including a speech pathologist, occupational therapist and a physiotherapist.
We have established links to regional service providers and community services throughout the Loddon Mallee region.
The Special Care Nursery can care for babies from 32 weeks gestation and caters for a range of babies’ needs.
Admissions to Special Care Nursery include babies born at Bendigo Health and outlying regional health service providers following consultation with the on-call paediatrician and the community.
