The Cath Lab provides a number of services, including diagnostic coronary angiography, stenting, electrophysiological ablation procedures, permanent pacemaker implantation and replacement and electrical cardioversion.
Other things include cardiac catheterisation and hemodynamic studies, electrophysiology studies, ICD implant and replacement, both subcutaneous and transevenous and loop recorder implant and removal.
We primarily care for Victoria’s Loddon Mallee region and surrounding areas, including southern part of New South Wales.
Cardiac Cath Lab offers an outpatient, elective, inpatient and emergency service.
To access Cath Lab you will need a referral from your GP.
If you are coming to hospital for a day procedure or an overnight (or longer) stay, you should wear comfortable clothes, such as pants or a tracksuit that is easy to put on and take off. Shoes should be comfortable, closed with firm gripping soles.
Open-back slippers and thongs are not suitable and are potentially dangerous for you and are strongly discouraged.
Certain types of appointments or procedures might need you to wear particular clothing. Staff will advise you about this on the day of the procedure.
How long will I need to stay?
Your stay will vary depending on the type of procedure you are having
Most procedures you will be required to stay for the whole day and discharged home with family or carer. Other procedures you will be admitted to the hospital for an overnight stay.
How long will the procedure take?
The time taken for the procedure will depend on the type of procedure you are having. The length of time for most of the procedures in the Cath Lab is less than an hour and up to two hours.
Can I drive home?
You are not able to drive yourself home following a procedure. You must have someone to drive you home and have someone stay with you for the first 24 hours post procedure. You will also need to stay within 20 kilometres of a hospital.
Will the procedure hurt?
Your pain will be managed with medication best suited to you and the procedure you are having. The nursing and medical staff will always endeavour to ensure you are comfortable and pain free wherever possible. Most of the procedures are undertaken under conscious sedation, in which case you will be awake but relaxed.
