Enhanced Crisis Assessment Team (ECAT)

What we do

Enhanced Crisis Assessment and Treatment is a specialist Mental Health and Wellbeing service based in the Emergency Department. The service provides timely mental health assessment and helps coordinate care and support when someone is experiencing a mental health crisis.

Our clinicians offer specialised assessments, consultation and referrals for people of all ages who present to the Emergency Department during a period of acute mental health distress.

We work alongside people, and where appropriate their families or carers, to understand what is happening and what support is needed. Our focus is on supporting safe, coordinated care and linking people to the most appropriate services, including supports available within their usual community and social networks wherever possible.

Who we care for

This service is available to people of any age who are experiencing a mental health crisis.

Support may also be accessed by:

  • people who feel they need urgent mental health support
  • families, carers or supporters of someone experiencing mental health concerns
  • members of the public who witness a mental health crisis and need assistance
  • health professionals and community service providers seeking urgent mental health support or advice
